I'm Not Standing Alone

Each night when I lay me down to sleep
I pray for the Lord my soul to keep.
I thank Him for no bad news at my door,
Then graciously ask, "Can I have one more?"
But this day was different from those before,
God called one home early from this dreadful war.
We lost one of our own, he was one of "our guys."
We were not ready, we'd prepared no good-byes.
Our eyes see he's gone, our hearts say, "That can't be."
As we turn each corner, its him we want to see.
Our brother in arms, a soldier, brave and strong,
But more - a true friend who will always live on.
A piece of us is missing, it's hard to comprehend.
It's him - all he stood for - that we shall defend.
We had plans for the future, as far as we could see,
Now I'll go by myself, but it won't only be me.
During the Ranger course, he'll be right by my side,
And that Ranger Tab, I'll wear with twice the pride.
As I reach each new peak in my service career,
He'll be there with me, grinning from ear to ear.
When my name is called over the loud megaphone,
I'll know, without doubt, I'm not standing alone.
