Thoughts of a Soldier

The sights I have seen and the things I have done,

They have scared me so much that I just want to run.

But where would I go or what path could I take?

These memories so strong, there would be no escape.

Sometimes I just feel that I am so alone,

But then I start thinking, there are others who've known

The pain that I'm feeling, the fright deep inside,

Like the very worst parts of some wild thrill ride.

Engaging in combat in some foreign land,

Each stranger could hold my whole life in his hand.

It takes time for a soldier to know whom to trust.

Will the next one he meets end his life with a thrust?

What is under that jacket or robe that he wears?

The thoughts sometimes bring me so close to tears.

But then I remember the lessons I've learned,

I know how to fight and my pride I have earned.

The life of a soldier is no simple one,

I've been trained to survive by wits and my gun.

So for all the soldiers who have gone before,

I'll stay and I'll fight until we win this war.

For to do any less would dishonor and shame

Those who have already died for our great country's name.
