Setting up in Afghanistan
Half A World Away
        by D. H. 05/07/2005

His father was an Army man
Doing his duty for the U.S.A.
He proudly served in Vietnam...
A half a world away.

Mom worked hard to raise her son,
Alone most every day.
While her husband fought for freedom
A half a world away.

When he was young he marched and drilled
For him, soldiering was play.
Wanting to be like his daddy...
A half a world away.

He quickly grew to manhood,
Too soon his mom would say.
He joined the Army, prepared to serve
A half a world away.

For years he served stateside,
Marching on red Georgia clay.
Preparing to serve where needed,
Even half a world away.

Then 9-11 happened...
Terrorist courses did not stray.
And we prepared to do battle
A half a world away.

Transferred to Bragg from Benning,
He made ready to enter the fray.
To fight on foreign soil,
A half a world away.

To his wife deployment came too soon,
But her fears she tries to allay.
He's now serving in Afghanistan...
A half a world away.

To him and his band of brothers,
For your speedy return we pray,
Asking God to bring you safely home
From half a world away.
